Not much is known about the origins of Valentine’s Day. According to the Catholic church, there were three Saint Valentines – a priest who served in third century Rome who married young lovers in secret, a man who was imprisoned and sent the first Valentine greeting to his sweetheart or a Roman who helped Christians escape prison. Whatever the truth, Saint Valentine, whomever he was, clearly had a big heart.
The first written Valentines messages appeared in the Middle Ages, and by the middle of the 18th century, the Valentine’s Day Card was popular and it was common for lovers and friends, to exchange small tokens on February 14th.

What to write in a Valentine’s Card
For some, the trickiest part of Valentine’s day is not the ideas for valentines day card, but what to write it it once it’s bought. Our advice is not to stress over it. If you buy the right card, there shouldn’t be the need for too many words. If you are feeling playful, you can post it anonymously and sign with a question mark and a kiss. Anything goes, although remember, if you write anything saucy, it might be seen by the dustbin men/your mum/grandma/neighbour etc if it does end up in the recycling bin. Poems are always a winner if your partner is a romantic at heart. Check out some love poems here.
